Assessment & Treatment
Our consultants are trained to assess and diagnose a large range of injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.
Our consultants have direct access to the latest in diagnostic ultrasound technology and are able to perform ultrasound scans to look at a range of soft tissue injuries and pathologies where required. Other investigation types including X-ray, MRI and CT scans can be organised. We have a network of local providers with negotiated competitive rates.
Where indicated our consultants are able to offer ultrasound guided injections to help manage pain and optimise recovery.
These include:
- Corticosteroid for inflammatory conditions e.g. bursitis, tennis elbow.
- Hyaluronic acid (Ostenil and Cingal) for osteoarthritic joints.
- Platelet rich plasma (PRP) for tendinopathies and osteoarthritic joints.
- High volume injections for Achilles tendinopathy and frozen shoulder.
If you are experiencing acute or persistent back and leg pain due to spinal nerve irritation, your consultant at Sportswise may advise that you would benefit from a caudal epidural injection alongside the other therapies.
Several common conditions that cause severe acute or chronic low back pain and/or leg pain (sciatica) from nerve irritation can be treated by steroid injections.
Research has shown that there is a subgroup of people with back pain that relates to a low grade of infection in damaged discs.
These bacteria can produce a substance called propionic acid which can then damage the adjacent bone and produces characteristic appearances on MRI scans called Modic changes.
The pain arises because of the effect of propionic acid on the bone which then is reported to cause microfractures which are painful. The researchers suggest that Modic-related low back pain could account for perhaps 20-40% of all chronic low back pain.
